A Note On Levels

Competitive ballroom dancing is divided up into levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Novice, Pre-Champ, and Champ. In addition, starting at one's first competition, one may compete as a Newcomer for 6 months. Every level has its own syllabus of steps and standards for technique, and dancers can be penalized for using figures above their level. E.g., a Bronze dancer should not use the Telemark step (Silver syllabus) and while technically legal it is not recommended that they use the more advanced "oversway" technique before reaching higher levels. Dances With Owls is invigilated to enforce adherence to syllabus and fairness between competitors. We encourage dancers to compete at their level and up one level (e.g. Newcomer and Bronze, Bronze and Silver) in order to get the most experience and push oneself to higher levels.
