The Rice Ballroom Team was founded as a formation dance team in the Fall of 2010. Over the last several years, we have grown into a competitive ballroom team with an emphasis on performing and developing new skills in a fun and recreational environment.

Who We Are

We are a group of undergraduate and graduate students who love to dance and have a fun time doing it!

What We Do

Our team focuses on the development of beginner and intermediate skills, and we encourage each other to dance and perform in both social and competitive environments. We offer FREE weekly beginner classes and semiweekly intermediate technique classes in ballroom and latin. In addition, our competitive ballroom formation performance team is open to all members who have studied ballroom for at least one semester. We also encourage members to compete in ballroom competitions across Texas -- including at competitions designed just for college students -- and especially at Rice Ballroom Team's own 'Dancing with Owls' competition!

Our Instructors

Vickie Dunn and Patrick Walsh coach the team.

Our Location

Most practices and rehearsals take place in the dance theater or a multipurpose room in the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation Center.

Rice Ballroom focuses on the following dances, though others are introduced from time to time.

International Standard American Smooth International Latin American Rhythm
Waltz Waltz Cha Cha Cha Cha
Tango Tango Rumba Rumba
Foxtrot Foxtrot Jive East Coast Swing
Viennese Waltz Viennese Waltz Samba Mambo
Quickstep Paso Doble Bolero

Across the four styles, dances with the same name have a few moves in common but otherwise may vary widely.

Dances With Owls - Rice University
NOVEMBER 4-5, 2016

Dances With Owls is Rice University’s annual college ballroom competition. DWO is a great way to test out ballroom skills in a friendly competition environment and includes a full-day ballroom competition, a special ballroom workshop, and a fun social dance. Participants are usually college-aged and come from universities across Texas, although non-students and other community members are also encouraged to participate in the fun!

Check Dances With Owls website for more information and videos from previous years.

Find additional information and the complete rules for the 2016 competition here.

Early Registration for 2016 DWO competition is OPEN now! ENTRY FORM HERE. Please note that it will be closed at 11:59 PM on October 25.

Ballroom Dancers: A great site to learn new moves from. Beginner moves from each dance are accompanied by free videos, while the rest have detailed footwork instructions.

Dance Central: A great site to learn standard and international Latin moves and technique. Also great place to learn dance basics such as dance hold, how to get into dance position, etc.

Playlists on YouTube and Spotify : Songs are separated according to their corresponding dances. Feel free to use when practicing!

But I’ve never danced before!

No problem! Many team members have never danced before joining. We love new beginners, and returning members are more than happy to help out new members!

Can I compete if I’ve never danced before?

Definitely. Dancers are placed into divisions based on experience, so you will only compete against others who are at the same level.
